Honchos: The House of Churros

If you love warm, fluffy churros, you’ll adore the menu at Honchos . This establishment got its start in 2017 as a food truck. You can still find that food truck near the Medical Center offering a small but satisfying selection of sweets. You can choose a filled churro with sauce in the middle, a mini churro with sauces on the side, or a frozen churro with vanilla ice cream and two sauces. Sauce options include cajeta caramel, honcho spiced caramel, cream cheese frosting, sweet coffee, condensed milk, strawberry jelly, grape jelly, peanut butter, Nutella, or chocolate.

If you’re looking for a more extensive menu, visit the House of Churros bakery shop. Here, you can find all the same treats that the food truck offers along with the thinner, crispier lassos, and spiraled twine. The bakery shop offers additional sauces including blueberry syrup and almond cream. You’ll find hot coffee drinks and chilled soda fizzies available in the bakery shop as well.

Location: 5800 Babcock Road, San Antonio (Food Truck) and 6421 Broadway Road, San Antonio (Bakery Shop)

Hours: The food truck is open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Bakery Shop is open from noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Monday.

Belgian Sweets

Belgian Sweets brings authentic European treats and decor to San Antonio. The dessert shop is thoughtfully furnished with 18th- and 19th-century antiques to create an atmosphere that’s as authentic as the menu. The Belgian waffles here are made using an 18th-century recipe with a leavened brioche-style pastry dough that’s caramelized with pearl sugar. You can enjoy them plain or with a wide range of toppings, including Dutch Butter Cookie spread, caramelized apples, chocolate sauce, fresh strawberries and whipped cream, ice cream, and more.

Though the waffles are one of the most distinct treats on the menu, they’re far from your only dessert option. You can also enjoy Neuhaus chocolates, dried fruit candies, marzipan, and artisan candies sourced from Belgium. You’ll find a rotating selection of cakes and pastries that may include delights like profiteroles, vanilla bean crème brûlée, and cheesecake.

The dessert parlor’s Belgian ice cream is made right on the premises in a rotating selection of flavors, including peanut butter banana, mango, pistachio, Belgian chocolate, and Dutch butter cookie. For decadent treats made in time-honored traditions, Belgian Sweets is the best spot in town.
